OA and EDA are 12-step programs for people with problems related to food including, but not limited to, compulsive overeating, bingeing, purging, and restricting. They are low-fee, community resource drop-in groups for recovery support. Because OA and EDA are peer-led support groups, they do not offer professional treatment or support that can be provided by a nutritionist, therapist, doctor, or psychiatrist. Any particular food plan followed in 12 step program is not endorsed by the author. Note:12-step programs have a spiritual approach to recovery. If you are looking for a secular support group, please see above listed resources or contact your local eating disorder treatment program(s), as many offer community groups or can refer you to a therapist-led, secular support group. (The Lotus collaborative, listed next, offers a free support group on Sundays in San Francisco).
